Critics Weigh Castro's Potential Departure

By Don Morgan

San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro's potential departure can't come soon enough for some of his critics.

Hoemowner Taxpayer Assoication of Bexar County President Bob Martin told 550 KTSA News he's not surprised the Mayor is being considered for a Cabinet position within the Obama Administration.

"He's closely aligned with Obama and Obama's policies--so I guess I really wasn't all that surprised" Martin said of the reports the Mayor will be the next Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, adding he hopes the city's next Mayor will focus more on saving taxpayer money.

"Somebody who's more aligned with the folks on the tax end of tax and spend--Council has been rubber stamping our utility increases for SAWS and CPS Energy" Martin said.

Others said the Mayor has picked the right time to go.

"I definitely feel his popularity here in San Antonio has nosedived" said George Rodriguez with the South Texas Tea Party Patriots. He told 550 KTSA News the trend is easy to see.

"Extending health benefits to domestic partners of city employees and the non-discrimination ordinance--all of these things have aliented people from him" Rodriguez said, also citing the Mayor's support for the controversail downtown streetcar project.
