Gonzales Pushes Transit Alternatives

By Bill O'Neil

The debate over San Antonio's transportation future can be a feisty one--and one City Councilwoman has been raising her voice--and sharing a vision that's sure to create a stir.

"As we think about the city overall and how we function, we must give people alternatives for transit" said Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales, who in recent weeks has voted against a council-approved plan to remove bike lanes from South Flores--as well as a resolution supporing the use of "Rainy Day" funds on highway projects around the state.

Gonzales told 550 KTSA News she's not against toll roads--but she doesn't see them as the ultimate answer to congestion either.

"I mean...it won't reduce the air quality issues, and it really doesn't address what we really know is the fundamental problem of giving people alternatives" Gonzales said, pointing to "alternatives" such as light rail, streetcars, and rpaid bus lines as an asnwer to efforts to combat sprawl--and improve air quality.
