The challenge starts before they reach the Rio Grande--The word from San Antonio Congressman Henry Cuellar on addressing the flood of immigrant children and families from Central America over the southern border in to the United States.
Simply put--the Congressman told 550 KTSA News playing defense on America's one-yard line has not worked.
"Or, we can start playing a little more defense on their twenty yeard line and adress the issues on the southern border with Mexico" Cuellar said. The Congressman said the time has come for the United States to begin working with strife-torn countries such as Guatemala and El Salvador in an effort to stem the tide, which could be seen as "labor" for Mexican drug cartels.
"Now we have a lot of Central Americans in Mexico, causing a lot of violence for them" Cuellar said.
The Congressman said he has reached out to officials from several Central American countries, as well as Mexico, in an effort to find a solution.
