Congressman Blasts Asteroid Plan

By Don Morgan

An astronomical waste of resouirces--that's just what the Chairman of the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee sees in NASA's continuing push for missions to capture and relocate an asteroid.

"Quite frankly, it's not supported by their own scientists" Congressman Lamar Smith told 550 KTSA News, adding "NASA has an advisory group--and the advisory group said it's not a serious proposal--it's really not going to accomplish anything."

The Congressman said the money and time should be spent on more beneficial space programs.

"Let's do something worthwhile--whether it's going to Mars or going back to the Moon. Going to retrieve an asteroid the size of a big conference table--we can do better than that" Smith said, pointing out the plan lacks a launch date--or even a budget.
