New Voting Suit Begins

By Kurt Gilchrist

The Obama Administration is set to begin a new push to have Texas pre-clear any election law changes with Washington, with a new legal challenge to be launched in San Antonio Monday.

The Justice Department and activists want a three-judge panel to rule Texas still requires pre-clearance, many Democrats insisting the law continues to be weighted against minorities.

"Republicans say we're just trying to make the voting process conform with the constitution and the laws--not neccesarily who they are voting for--but are they voting in regard to the law" said University of Texas-Arlington Political Scientist Allan Saxe.

A decision is not expected for months.
