VIA Waiting On Streetcar Decision

By Bill O"Neil

Waiting to hear what VIA's Board has to say about downtown streetcar plans? You'll have to wait until at least tomorrow.

VIA said it will discuss the plan Friday--a day after it's Board met behind closed doors--two days after San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor and Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff dropped city and county support respectively for the plan.

The city has dropped it's support in faovr of crafting a new transportation plan.

"We have an opportunity to put it in the framework of a larger multi-modal transportation plan that the city was already working on with the Metropolitan Planning Organization" said the Mayor.

As for what appears to be enough certified signatures to allow a vote on changing the City Charter, the Mayor isn't saying much.

"We'll have a full report on that on Wednesday" Taylor said. In announcing an end to city support for the project, the Mayor said she wants to see an ordinance requiring the people to vote on any rail project proposed in the future.
