Union Weighs In on Tattoo Policy

By Kurt Gilchrist

Thinking about a career in law enforcement? You might want to consider if and where you have any tattoos.

Some changes are set to go in to effect at the San Antonio Police Department September 1st--which will include visible tattoos. Union leaders told 550 KTSA News many current officers are not onboard with the changes.

"They're extremeely upset about the policy specifically because throughout their whole careers even going throught he academy--there's been no direction given by management--that's taboo, don't do that" said San Antonio Police Officers Association President Michael Helle. He said about 10% of current officers have visible ink--though he does agree some guidelines make sense.

"I wouldn't disagree that there should be some guidlines. You shouldn't have tattos on your face, teardrops on your eyes or on your ears. Anything that's exposed on your neck--that I would agree with" Helle said.
