School Zone Safety Concerns

By Bill O'Neil

Just how safe is it for your kids to walk to school? A San Antonio City Councilman has lots of questions, and he wants answers.

The hit and run accident that took the life of 9-year old Tatyana Babineaux earlier this year has clearly left a mark on Councilman Joe Krier, who has asked for a comprehensive citywide report of school zone traffic safety.

"Tell us what needs to be done to make sure all of our school zones are as safe as we can reasonably make them" Krier said in describing the kind of information he's looking for in the report. He told 550 KTSA News the concerns are shared by a number of his collegaues. Since any upgrades won't happen overnight, Krier said it's time to take a safety message home.

"We talk to kids all the time about not talkign to strangers, we talk to them in schools about not doing drugs or alcohol--but we rartely talk to kids about how to sagfely cross the street" Krier said.
