UTSA Senior Wins Miss Fiesta Crown

While the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo is in full swing, Fiesta San Antonio organizers are getting ready for 11 days of Fiesta fun in April.

Twenty-two-year-old Virginia Eliott was crowned Miss Fiesta San Antonio this past weekend.

As part of the competition, she performed a skit about actress Farrah Fawcett, who recently died after a long bout with cancer.   Eliott says she did it in honor of her father, a cancer survivor who saw his daughter win the crown on his birthday Saturday night at the Empire Theatre.

"My  Dad has suffered from cancer and there's a long history of cancer in our family," Eliott told 550 KTSA News.  My father is such a strong survivor and I love him and today's his birthday!"

First princess is Jillian Allovio, a  UTSA junior who's majoring in Early Childhood Education.   Daphne Villarreal, who's working on her Masters in English and Communications Arts at Our Lady of the Lake University, is second princess.

Eliott and her royal court will participate in dozens of Fiesta events and other activites in the community through the year.

"My favorite Fiesta event is Night in Old San Antonio with all the varous cultures and volunteers who work so hard.  It's an amazing experience," said Eliott.
