The Bexar County Commissioners Court has approved 900-thousand dollars to fund the design of the new Loop 1604 Super Street Project which will run from Braun Road to Highway 151.
Bexar County Engineer Rene Green says the funding comes from Advanced Transportation District funds.
"They're going to make some operational and safety improvements at the Braun Road intersection and they're going to eliminate the cross traffic at the Shaenfield and New Guilbeau intersections so that all traffic trying to get onto 1604 will have to make a right turn and then go up and make a u-turn to go the direction they want to go," said Green.
So how will that improve traffic flow?
"Essentially what that does, is it reduces the stopping time and reduces the delay time on 1604 at those two areas," added Green.
The Super Street Project is expected to reduce traffic by 69-percent in the morning and 79-percent in the evening according to Bexar County Commissioner Paul Elizondo who also says average speeds on 1604 are expected to increase by about 10 mph in the morning and 18 mph at night.
So when can northwest side motorists expect work to begin?
"We anticipate having the design completed this year with construction starting in January of 2011 and we should be completed with construction in August of 2011, so it's about a seven month construction window to do the Super Street concept," said Green.
This project also paves the way for the Highway 151 Underpass project which is expected to begin in May of 2011 and be completed in August 2013.
