SAC Forms Partnership with Texas State

Dr. Robert Habingreither has been with the science department at Texas State University for more than 30 years, and he says unfortunately there is a lack of minority students enrolled in math, science and engineering classes.

"I see it getting better, and that's the good news but I also know that it is very difficult to recruit students into those fields because lets face it, it is not easy material," said Dr. Habingreither.

So Texas State has signed an agreement with San Antonio College which will make it easier for students enrolled in the Mathematics, Engineering and Science Achievement program, or MESA, to transfer to Texas State.

"So that our students who are involved in STEM courses, science, math and technology, can articulate easily to Texas State University and we are very excited about the partnership," said SAC President Dr. Bob Zeigler.

Dr. Zeigler also says this partnership will benefit the entire community.

"We all know that there is a shortage of math, engineering and science majors, and this is particularly true among minority populations. This agreement will enable us to enhance our curriculum to really make sure that what we are doing here meets university standards," added Dr. Zeigler.

The partnership was made possible thanks to a Title 5 grant which has also allowed SAC to open a new MESA Center complete with computers, projectors and other technology.
