Push to Honor Blues Singer on the Eastside

Rio Grande Street on the city’s east side between Commerce Street and just south of MLK Drive may soon be Mel Waiters Way.

District 2 Councilman Alan Warrick, along with late blues singer’s wife and daughter, submitted a council consideration request for the change Thursday afternoon.

“This street will say to my dad’s generation job well done but for people in my generation or younger, it’s saying it is possible to make things happen and achieve your dreams,” Brittany Waiters said.

Waiters was born, raised and lived his entire life in San Antonio. If approved, the street could be renamed by the end of the year.

Warrick said he does not expect any opposition to the street name change.
