The San Antonio salute to Veterans continues Saturday with a wreath laying ceremony at the Alamo and a downtown parade.
The activities at Alamo Plaza will start at 8 a.m. with the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) drill competition followed by a wreath laying ceremony at 10 o’clock.
Secretary of the Army Eric Fanning will be one of the speakers.
“We are very honored to have him here,” said Esther Garcia, Vice President of the U.S. Military Veterans Parade Association.
The 323rd U.S. Army Band from Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston will provide patriotic music for the program, which will be followed by the parade at noon.
The Grand Marshals are State Senators Jose Menendez and Carlos Uresti, who were selected because of their “dedication and support to our veterans,” said Garcia.
The Honorary Grand Marshal is World War II Navy Veteran Susano Ortiz, who served on the USS Guadalupe.
“We have a special entry, the 187th Assault Helicopter Company,” said Garcia. The group comprised of Vietnam Veterans is holding its reunion in San Antonio.
The 1.6-mile parade will begin at noon at Avenue E and Travis. It will go in front of the Alamo and proceed west on Commerce Street to Market Square.
