SAPD to Get Replacement Tasers

Just how much will it cost to replace the San Antonio Police Department’s old tasers with new ones?

City Council has approved spending about $3.1. million this time around.

“It’s pretty much identical in function and shape” SAPD Chief William McManus told KTSA News in comparing the new tasers to be purchased with the devices they will replace, adding “The difference is primarily just internal.”

McManus said the older tasers were coming due to be replaced.

“They have an end of life date, and we typically replace them” McManus said, pointing out the benefit the tasers have brought to SAPD.

“It helps reduce risk to the officers and the folks they’re dealing with… it’s a benefit in that regard as well” McManus said.

The new tasers will be given to officers during training throughout the year.
