Texas Southern Drops Cornyn From Commencement

By Bill O’Neil

The Senate’s Number Two Republican will not appear at Texas Southern University’s Commencement activities.

The move came after students at the historically black university protested Senator John Cornyn’s scheduled appearance this weekend.

In a statement, the school said Cornyn had instead been asked to “visit with our students at a future date in order to keep the focus on graduates and their families.”

A petition protesting Cornyn’s appearance cited various positions the Senator has taken–including his votes in favor of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos and Attorney General Jeff Sessions confirmations.

The cancellation comes days after DeVos was booed and heckled as she delivered a commencement address at Bethune-Cookman University in Florida.
