Which One Was Worse?

When it comes to sports, I’m a fan, period. No one’s asking me to guest host on ESPN/SA unless their air staff all gets a bad batch of  hot wings.

So, having established that, why the hell is US Soccer goalie Hope Solo’s just-announced punishment way worse than Lyin’ Ryan Lochte?  (sorry, it’s a Trump thing)

The facts: Solo (who I know has a checkered past, but one crime at a time) called the Swedish team “cowards” after they ousted the US 4-3 with penalty kicks in the quarters at Rio. Here’s the money quote:

“I think we showed a lot of heart. We came back from a goal down. I’m very proud of this team,” she said. “But I also think we played a bunch of cowards. The best team did not win today. I strongly believe that.”

Granted, the Swedes played conservatively, but didn’t break any rules (did they?). I’ve seen teams in the sports I actually watch do all kinds of things to run out the clock, run up the score and sit on a lead.

But, have the US Soccer governors ever heard the postgame soundbites from the NFL or NBA? “Cowards” is almost a term of endearment, guys.

So, she said something nonsensical…and…mean.  As our VP would say, “B.F.D.”

Meanwhile, over in the green slime pool, is the author of a particularly crappy lie, crappily told. Lochte embarassed himself, his team mates and his country.

Solo got kicked off the team for 6 months, and potentially never plays again.

Lochte lost a few endorsements, and made Al Roker mad, but will probably get a reality show, a book deal, “Dancing With the Stars” (I’m told that’s NOT considered punishment) and continues swimming competitively.

He was charged with a crime and made international news.

She called the other team a name.

Good grief, Charlie Brown.
