14-year-old girl arrested in ‘accidental’ shooting death of teenage boy

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – A 14-year-old girl is facing a charge of manslaughter in the accidental shooting death of a teenage boy.

Sheriff  Javier Salazar says several teens were playing with guns and taking pictures with the weapons around noon Thursday on Lands Pond in West Bexar County when the shooting occurred.

After the photos were taken, the girl  picked up the gun because she was curious .

“The gun had a red laser sight on it.  She pointed that weapon at 16-year-old Moses Reyes and discharged the weapon one time,” said Salazar.

Reyes suffered a gunshot wound to the shoulder.  He was rushed to a hospital where he died a few hours later.

“It’s a tragic situation, no matter how you look at it,” said Salazar. “Moses’ life was cut short at the age of 16.”

While investigators believe it was an accident, Salazar says “it was a criminal act.”

Salazar believes that the gun was stolen. At least one of the teens who was in the home when Reyes was fatally wounded had been involved in some vehicle burglaries in the area near Potranco Road at Loop 1604.  If you recently had a handgun stolen, call the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office at 210-335-6000.

Salazar says other teens at the scene of the shooting left with another gun before deputies arrived.  The search continues for those teens and the weapon.  There’s also a chance that adults who were in the home at the time may face charges.
