50 year old man arrested for neglecting elderly mother
SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — The worst case of neglect of an elderly person I’ve ever seen.
The words of Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar following the arrest of a man who was being paid to care for his 74 year old mother.
Instead, 50 year old Juan Huerta would leave home at around 5 A.M. and not return for several hours, leaving his ailing mother home alone while he worked as a truck driver.
Maria Huerta died Saturday and when police arrived at the home in Elmendorf, they found she had been seriously neglected.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar says the woman’s body was covered in sores with her bones visible in some spots and maggots eating her flesh in others.
Salazar says her son was being paid through a state agency to care for his mother.
He’s being charged with injury to the elderly with bodily injury by omission.
