Abbott requests TEA create new school security boss position

(Texas News Radio) — Texas Governor Greg Abbott sent a letter Thursday to the Texas Education Agency to create a school safety position.

The position, called the Chief of School Safety and Security, will be expected to be an expert on school security and public safety.  Additionally, this person will be a resource to schools and lawmakers to implement programs.

Abbott directed TEA commissioner Mike Morath to create the position.

“The task of ensuring the safety of our schools and students is not solely held within one entity in the State, but encompasses many different agencies and divisions, all with different charges and authority in implementing legislation and making recommendations for future policy changes,” reads the letter.
