BCSO: Suspect arrested after deadly chase, shootout on highway over dumped trash
SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is announcing the arrest of a man connected to a chase involving gun fire on Wednesday.
John Yeates, 39, was arrested Tuesday morning, and he is now being charged with felony deadly conduct.
Investigators say it all started when Yeates and another man dumped trash at a car lot in the 12700 block of U.S. Highway 181. After a confrontation with employees, Sheriff Javier Salazar says Yeates and the other man drove off.
At that point, BCSO says a chase got started that included gunfire, likely from the truck Yeates was in and a car driven by George Gomez, 36. Investigators say Gomez was one of the employees at the car lot where the trash was dumped.
Sheriff Salazar says shots were fired by Gomez toward the truck, and some of those shots were fired through his windshield.
After the chase covered several miles, Gomez eventually gave up and started heading back to the car lot. At some point thereafter, BCSO says Gomez crashed his vehicle on Highway 181 near Loop 1604. It is believed that Gomez suffered a heart attack before he lost control of the vehicle. Gomez also suffered a broken neck and back during the crash and died at the scene.
The pickup truck that Yeates was riding in ended up with a flat tire, and by the time he and the driver could get back with a new tire, deputies were already on the scene talking with witnesses that stayed with the truck. At that point, Sheriff Salazar says Yeates and the driver walked away from the scene.
Additional charges could be filed as the investigation continues.
This is a developing story and KTSA News will give more details when possible.
