Bexar Appraisal District recovering from attempted ransonware attack

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — The Bexar County Appraisal District was hit with a ransomware attack over the weekend.

The BCAD acknowledged the weekend attack with a note on their website.

BCAD Assistant Chief Appraiser Scott Griscom told KSAT a ransom note was received via email, but hackers did not include a bounty amount or any contact information.

Griscom said hackers were not able to access the county’s appraisal records database, which includes the resident’s property information, though officials said an initial forensic investigation revealed that BCAD systems were partially affected and damaged files are currently being restored.

“At this time, we are still in recovery mode and full assessments are ongoing. We are working to restore functionality as fast as possible; however, it may take a couple of days to restore full functionality,” officials said in a release.

The BCAD’s website and online portal are unaffected and remain online.

The FBI has been notified of the ransomware attack.

Other local entities have dealt with ransomware attacks in recent memory.

Judson ISD’s IT systems were taken hostage in August, prompting the district to pay nearly $550,000 in taxpayer funds to recover the personal information of students and staff.
