Bexar County inmate charged with murdering another inmate

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — An inmate at the Bexar County Jail has been charged with murdering another inmate.

The Texas Rangers say 66 year old Curtis Smith was found face down and unresponsive in his cell just before noon on Saturday.

In the cell with him were two other inmates. One of them, 52 year old Mark Anthony Wong told officers that Smith was threatening to assault him so he grabbed a bandana and wrapped it around Smith’s neck.

Wong went on to say that when Smith appeared to have died, he took a sock that belonged to the third inmate and stuffed it into Smith’s mouth.

At that point, jail staff was alerted to what had happened. They attempted to revive Smith but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Wong was being held on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and now murder charges are being added on.

Bond was set at 1 million dollars.
