Bexar County Sheriff’s Office: Man arrested for punching elections worker after being asked to remove his hat bonds out of jail
SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — He was asked to remove his MAGA hat by a Bexar County elections worker, but a San Antonio man chose to cast his fists after casting his ballot.
The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office says 63-year-old Jesse Lutzenberger showed up to vote at the Johnston Branch Library at around 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
He was wearing a red “Make America Great Again” and since Texas law prohibits wearing anything that supports or opposes a political candidate within 100 feet of a polling location, he was asked to remove his hat.
Lutzenberger obliged and proceeded to cast his ballot, but as he was leaving the polling location, he placed the cap back on his head.
The elections clerk again asked Lutzenberger to remove his cap, but instead of taking off the hat until he got outside, he reportedly started throwing fist at the 69-year-old clerk.
He landed several punches to the man’s face and chest then left the location.
Deputies were able to track him down to his home and Lutzenberger is said to have told them he was the one they were looking for.
He was charged with Injury to the Elderly, a third-degree felony.
The election worker was treated at the scene by EMS.
Bexar County D-A Joe Gonzales released a statement following the arrest, saying he intends to instruct his staff to “vigorously prosecute this individual and hold him and anyone else accountable who engages in this type of criminal behavior.”
Lutzenberger is said to have posted $30,000 bond and was released from the Bexar County Adult Detention Center late Friday night.
