Bexar County Sheriff’s Office: Two children left in car avoid injury after going for a short drive on Northeast Side
SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A man has been arrested after his 5-year-old child took the family car for a short drive.
It happened Monday on North Foster Road on the Northeast Side.
Bexar County deputies say 41-year-old Derrick Deloach, Sr. left two children in a car while he went inside a Family Dollar store. He reportedly left the car running while he shopped and, at one point, his 5-year-old got behind the wheel and put the car in gear.
The child backed into traffic, then went forward and stopped after hitting a curb.
Witnesses report a 3-year-old got out of the vehicle and was in the middle of the street.
Neither child was injured but Deloach has been charged with child endangerment/abandonment. He claims the children were sleeping when he went in the store.
Child Protective Services is investigating the case.
