Bob Dylan album returned after 48 years

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio (AP) – A 73-year-old man has returned a Bob Dylan album that he took out of a library that is 48 years overdue.

The library in University Heights, Ohio, says Howard Simon of San Francisco sent back a copy of Dylan’s “Self Portrait” that he recently found between two other Dylan albums in his vinyl collection.

Simon wrote to the library, acknowledging he took out the album in 1973 as an eighth-grader and by his count the album is “approximately 17,480 days overdue.”

He also sent $175 as a replacement fee.

The library staff say the album cover is a little battered, but the records are in great shape. Branch manager Sara Phillips says they don’t charge overdue fines anymore, so “we can now call it even.”
