Deputies search ‘gruesome crime scene’ where burning body was found

UPDATE: SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News)  – A man’s burning body was found Sunday night near a West Bexar County highway, but Sheriff Javier Salazar believes the victim was already dead before he was set on fire at that location.

San Antonio firefighters responded to a call about a grass fire around 11 pm Sunday off of Highway 90 at Pue Road.  As crews extinguished the flames, they discovered the body.   They also determined that the area is in Bexar County, so the investigation was turned over to BCSO.

“It is a very gruesome crime scene,” Salazar said. “The facts that have been recounted to me are very gruesome in nature, of course.”

He believes the victim was killed elsewhere.

“There is some evidence that would indicate he was brought here already deceased, and then dropped here and set on fire,” Salazar told reporters on the scene Monday.

Deputies combed an area that stretched from Highway 90 at Pue Road to  Loop 1604 as they searched for clues in the death of the man who’s described as a White or Hispanic male in his 30s or 40s.

“We will be disrupting traffic back to 1604.  We do have some evidence that leads back that far , and we’re asking anybody that has to travel through this area to bear with us,” said the sheriff.

He was ‘cautiously optimistic’ that evidence at the scene of the crime will lead investigators to the suspect or suspects involved.
