TORONTO (AP) – A North American nation has introduced legislation that would put a freeze on importing, buying or selling handguns.

It wasn’t the U.S; it was Canada. Prime Minister Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has introduced legislation that would put a freeze on handguns.

The regulations to halt the growth of personally owned handguns is expected to be enacted this fall.

Canada already plans to ban 1,500 types of military-style firearms and offer a mandatory buyback program that will begin at the end of the year.

Trudeau said if someone really wants to keep an assault weapon, it will be made inoperable.

Canada has already expanded background checks for those who wish to buy weapons.
