Capital murder suspect to go free after case dismissed due to lack of evidence, Bexar County DA’s Office

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — One of two men accused of capital murder will be going free while the other remains set to stand trial.

KSAT-12 reports the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office has dismissed one case due to a lack of evidence.

Juan Antonio Reyes was supposed to go to trial this week, but he will be set free from jail instead. He was accused of shooting Sergio Soto and his aunt, Rachel Martinez, in the head. Investigators also say Reyes and his co-defendant, John Bishop Torres, helped set the victims’ house on fire in July 2022.

Firefighters would later find the bodies, and the deaths were ruled homicide.

Reyes and Torres were identified by surveillance video, and detectives think the suspects left the home just after it was set on fire.

According to court documents, Reyes had a previous charge of aggravated assault dropped in 2021 due to a witness that did not follow through with testimony.

While Reyes will be released from jail, Torres is still charged with capital murder and his trial is supposed to start Friday.
