Car thief crashes after off-duty officer shoots at him

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — An off-duty police officer is getting credit for stopping a man who stole a car at gunpoint Sunday afternoon.

It happened at around 4 P.M. on Old Pearsall Road.

Officers got a call for a robbery in progress. They were told a man pointed a gun at a woman in a Dodge Charger and stole her car. She wasn’t hurt, but police spent a couple of hours searching for the car.

An off-duty officer heard the radio chatter and spotted the stolen vehicle just before 7 P.M. He tried to get the driver to stop but the man kept going. That’s when the officer pulled his gun and fired at the stolen car.

The thief wasn’t hit and he tried speeding away until he crashed when he failed to negotiate a turn at Old Pearsall and Hillburn.

The man was taken into custody and officers found the gun he had used in the carjacking.

His bame and the charges he is facing haven’t been released. Police are continuing their investigation.
