SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – President Trump says the White House is “seriously thinking” about ending birthright citizenship, but Congressman Joaquin Castro says he can’t do that.

“Any idea that he can do it unilaterally without going to congress, without changing the Constitution is just ridiculous,” said Castro.

The 14th Amendment says that all  persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States, but President Trump has called that rule a “magnet for illegal immigration.”

Castro says there’s no support in Congress to eliminate birthright citizenship.

“Birthright citizenship is  fundamental to the United States.  It’ part of our fabric as a nation and I don’t see that changing anytime soon,” Castro said.
