SAN ANTONIO (KTSA NEWS) — Congressman Will Hurd is hoping people don’t get the wrong impression of El Paso after 22 people were killed in a shooting at a Walmart store last weekend.

During an appearance on MSNBC Thursday morning, Hurd said El Paso is consistently ranked as one of the nation’s safest cities and that the shooter was not from the community.

“El Paso is the 22nd largest city in the United States of America…and it’s been one of the safest of it’s size for the last couple of decades.”

He noted that distinction was in place even when Juarez, the Mexican city directly across the border was one of the most dangerous cities in the world.

He says the city is shaken but coming together.

“What happened in El Paso, that horrific murders that happened a few days ago…has really shocked a community that has …has worked together and support one another.”

Hurd recently announced that he is not seeking re-election.
