Couple charged in deadly dog attack have trial dates

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A couple facing charges after a deadly dog attack in San Antonio will have to wait until early 2024 to go on trial.

KSAT-12 reports the trial dates for Christian Moreno and Abilene Schneider will start next spring. Moreno’s trial is set to begin March 22, and Schneider’s trial will start less than a month later on April 12.

A judge ruled on Wednesday that all evidence gathered by prosecutors must be handed over to defense attorneys by December 1. Should either defendant decide to take a plea, they will have to do so by March 8.

Police say Ramon Najera, 81, was killed when three dogs owned by the couple got loose and attacked him in the 2800 block of Depla Street. San Antonio firefighters had to use pike poles and pick axes to keep the dogs away from them, but that did not prevent minor injuries taken by one fire captain.

Najera’s wife, Juanita, was also hurt in the attack, and she has since filed a lawsuit against both Schneider and Moreno. Investigators say some witnesses who saw the attack told them they were getting death threats.

Animal Care Services took the dogs owned by the couple, and each were later put down.

Schneider and Moreno are both charged with injury to the elderly and dangerous dog attack resulting in death.
