CPS Energy customers set energy use record as temperatures soar

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – The heat is on and most air conditioners across the city are running full blast, especially during the afternoon hours, so it comes as no surprise that CPS Energy customers set a new record for energy use Monday afternoon –5, 109 megawatts.  The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) also set a peak demand record monday, reaching 74,531 MW.

With temperatures expected to soar through next week, utility officials are asking us to cut down on the use of large appliances during the peak demand hours of 3 pm to 7 pm. That’s the time of day when temperatures reach their highest. It’s also the time when many people are getting home from work or school and they’re turning on the stove to cook dinner while doing the laundry.

“We really want to ask San Antonians to take key actions to reduce their energy use, especially during the hottest time of the day,” said CPS Energy spokeswoman Nora Castro.

To help keep energy usage low and minimize the effect on your utility bills, you can set the thermostat between 78 and 80 degrees, and bump it up a few degrees when you’re away from home. Use fans in occupied rooms. Turn off lights and unplug electronic equipment that’s not being used.

Castro also recommends not using large appliances, such as the washing machine, dryer or dishwasher between the hours of 3 and 7 pm.

She reminds area residents to keep safety in mind and power down with your health in mind. Take energy-saving measures only if your health permits and go to one of the cooling shelters in our area if necessary.
