SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — When the temperature rises to record breaking highs, so does the amount of electricity used by area residents.
CPS Energy says the demand for power hit an all-time high Wednesday evening.
It happened between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Wednesday, a day when the mercury topped out at 108 degrees.
The utility reports the demand during that hour was 5,858MW.
The previous record was August 21, 2023, exactly one year earlier, at 5,703MW.
How much electricity is that? One megawatt is typically enough to power 1,000 homes on an average day.
