Fallen firefighter Greg Garza to be laid to rest today

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – A procession of fire trucks will depart the Alamodome around 9 this morning on the way to Community Bible Church in the North Side for the funeral of a fallen firefighter.

The long line of apparatuses will head north of Highway 281 to Loop 1604 near Gold Canyon Road in honor of firefighter Greg Garza who was killed in the line of duty last week. Expect delays along 281 from downtown to Loop 1604 until around 9:45.

Joe Arrington with the San Antonio Fire Department says Garza’s family will depart Porter Loring Mortuary on McCullough near IH 35 around 10:45 this morning and head North on 281 to Community Bible Church. Garza’s casket will be transported to the church on an antique fire truck.

The funeral service for Garza is scheduled to begin at noon at Community Bible Church. Prior to the service, firefighters and pipes and drums will lead the casket and Garza’s family into the church.

Following the service, there will be the playing of taps, presentation of gifts to the family, a flyover, and the final alarm on firefighter radios.

Garza was fatally struck by a van  after falling off a fire truck while responding to a call outside an East Side Hotel October 14.
