Fentanyl overdoses believed to be causes of death for three Hays CISD students

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — Officials with the Hays CISD are reporting that three students have died of fentanyl overdoses in recent weeks.

FOX 29 is reporting the latest death happened this past weekend when a 15 year old overdosed.

The other two students who died were 17.

On the district’s website, a statement reads that communities in region began seeing an increase in overdoses, poisonings and deaths related to fentanyl.

The statement adds that in many cases, people have no idea they’ve taken fentanyl as the drug is often sold as something else, such as Xanax, Percocet, or oxycodone.

Superintendent Dr. Eric Wright says the district hasn’t lost a single student to Covid-19 or gun violence.

“I’m worried. We take all safety and security issues very seriously, but this one is especially concerning. We must treat the fentanyl crisis with urgency.”

The district says it is taking precautionary steps to help fight the fentanyl problem by partnering with local law enforcement, stocking Narcan at all campuses and working on in-school educational opportunities.
