Update: Fire Sends Smoke Over Downtown S.A.

Plenty of drama in Downtown San Antonio Monday Afternoon–after fire leads to the evacuation of a parking garage at the Rivercenter Mall.

As of about 1:30, crews appeared to be getting a handle on the fire–which for a time sent black smoke billowing above the City.

“What it ended up being was part of the demolition they’re doing–one of the cooling towers was being cut with a torch–and it does contain some dry timbers and wood. That’s where the fire actually started” said the San Antonio Fire Department’s Deborah Foster, who told KTSA News the flames were put out relatively quickly.

However, plenty of questions remain.

“We are dealing with some stability issues when it comes to that garage. So, we are not allowing anybody to use the entrances and exits, and we are keeping everyone off of the sidewalks” Foster said.

The fire brought out more than two-dozen San Antonio Fire Department units to battle the flames and smoke.
