SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — As Wednesday marks the 23rd anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, an annual tradition in San Antonio reaches a milestone of its own.

For the 11th straight year, first responders climbed Tower of the Americas to honor those killed during multiple attacks in New York, Washington, DC and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

The climb started at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, and those taking part climbed the tower twice in full tactical gear.

KSAT-12 reports around 500 first responders have taken part over the years, some yet to have been born when the attacks happened.
