NEW YORK (AP) – It took a movie about a clash between two old monsters to help Hollywood get some of its financial strength back.

“Godzilla vs. Kong” was the top movie over the weekend.

Its estimated $48.5 million box office take is easily the best opening in the pandemic era.

The movie played in more than 3,000 theaters.

Comscore reports about 60% of theaters were open over the weekend, with most operating at or under 50% capacity.

Hollywood hopes were also brightened by the fact that “Godzilla vs. Kong” was available as a stream, even as it was being shown in theaters.
