SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — Hundreds of dead fish are washing up on the shores of Calaveras Lake in Southeast Bexar County.

According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, the fish, mostly red drum and shad, likely died because recent high temperatures have resulted in low oxygen levels in the water.

The lake, which serves as a cooling reservoir for power plants in the area, is also a popular spot for local anglers.

Parks and Wildlife says the fish kill is a common occurrence in the lake, happening a couple of times each year.

The dead fish were not removed from the lake. Officials say they provide food sources for other living organisms in the water.
