Is Biden Coming for Your Gas Stove Next?
To hear the Biden administration tell it, they’re not targeting gas stoves. But let’s be real. Ever since January 2023, when CPSC Commissioner Richard Trumka Jr. publicly hinted that a ban on gas stoves was “a real possibility,” Americans have been asking what’s next. After the backlash, we got the usual lip service: “No, we’re not going to ban them!” But they’re not fooling anyone.
Instead of going after gas stoves directly, Biden’s administration is doing an end run by targeting gas hookups. Think about that. If there’s no natural gas service to a home or apartment, those of us who prefer gas cooking are out of luck, forced to pay more to run electric stoves—even though we never asked for it.
DOE’s proposed energy standards for gas stoves weren’t exactly subtle, either. They’ve walked back a bit after the pushback, but the message is clear: if they can’t push the stoves out, they’ll squeeze out gas service itself. And with electricity prices jumping up 72 percent since Biden’s been in office, they’re handing us yet another financial hit—$98 billion this year alone. Texas, New York, California—all states where renewables have been heavily subsidized—are seeing electricity prices soar, putting more strain on American households.
So, do they really think we’ll just sit back and switch off the gas?
