Little League World Series: Boerne hammers Mid Atlantic champs in opener

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — Boerne Little League appeared to have its hands full to begin its run in the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.

After all, the boys from Texas were headed to their opponent’s backyard, and that team entered the LLWS on an eye-popping 18-game winning streak. This team from Council Rock Newtown was making its second appearance in the late-summer classic, and looked like the kind of team you might want to play later on in the tournament.

And yet, Boerne Little League did not so much as flinch in a convincing 9-0 win over the champions of the Mid Atlantic region.

Yes, the Southwest region champions looked like they had control of this game from start to finish, highlighted by three home runs. One of those long balls was a grand slam from Kole Newsom in the fifth inning that blew the game open. Boerne’s first homer, a line drive over the left field wall by Caden Guffy, was the first dinger of the entire tournament.

This game also had defense, with Boerne’s pitching staff combining for a two-hit shutout win. Pitcher Julian Hurst got the win while racking up 10 strikeouts over four innings in relief.

Boerne now enters the winners bracket and will face the winner of Friday’s game between the Northwest and Southeast region champs on Monday at 6 p.m. CDT
