SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A man who fired nearly 30 rounds at San Antonio Police on the East Side is in critical condition at a local hospital after an officer returned fire.

It all started on Tuesday afternoon on Essex Street where investigators the man was arguing with another man over some money.

The 33-year-old suspect pulled a gun and shot the man in the leg before running off.

Police chased him to a home where they say he got between two other vehicles and began shooting at the officers with an AR-15.

After positioning themselves across the street, one of the officers returned fire, hitting the man one time.

The suspect was taken to the hospital and reports indicate he may not survive. If he does, a charge of attempted capital murder of a police officer is expected. The suspect’s  name has not been released, but Chief William McManus says he has a lengthy criminal record.

None of the officers involved were hurt.
