San Antonio (KTSA News) — A man threatening to jump from Interstate 37 near the Alamodome has been shot and killed by San Antonio police.

Chief William McManus says police negotiators talked the man off the ledge on IH 37 near Cesar Chavez Boulevard this morning, but they backed off when they were told by someone in the police chopper that he had a gun.

“The helicopter pilots saw that he had a weapon in his waistband believed to be a gun in the back of his pants,” said McManus.

He says the man reached for the weapon and four officers opened fire, shooting him in the torso and leg.  The man did not have a gun.

“It turned out to be a knife with a gun grip handle,” said McManus.

The man was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
