More tax breaks approved to woo Tesla plant to Austin
(Texas News Radio) — Travis County is moving forward with its tax-break proposal to woo Tesla to a site off of State Highway 130 near Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.
The Austin American-Statesman reported Travis County commissioners Tuesday approved a package that would be worth $14 million in tax savings for Tesla over 10 years if the electric car company invests $1.1 billion into the manufacturing plant it is considering to build.
The measure passed on a four-to-none vote with one commissioner abstaining.
It comes after the Del Valle ISD school board approved a $46.4 million tax break over 10 years last week.
Tesla is pitting Austin against Tulsa to see where it builds its next Gigafactory. Austin has been viewed as the favorite between the two, but Tesla officials at Tuesday’s commissioners court meeting were noncommittal about whether they intended to move forward with the Austin property.
