SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — The increasing popularity of electric scooters brought the need for some new rules in San Antonio.

Last month, City Council voted to make it illegal to ride the scooters on city sidewalks. That law takes effect this Monday.

The scooters are also prohibited in Alamo Plaza, the River Walk, and city parks and trails.

Riders have to be 16 or older and only one person can ride a scooter at a time. Scooter riders will also have to yield to pedestrians and when they are done, park the scooters neatly and out of walkways.

If you’re caught violating the new laws, you could be fined up to 500 dollars.

The city says the new laws are part of the commitment to striking a balance between innovative transportation options and providing safe, accessible sidewalks and streets.
