The percentage of uninsured children in Texas is going down but the numbers show there is till work to be done.
Anne Dunkleberg at the Center for Public Policy Priorities says Texas still has the highest number of uninsured children in the nation.
So why is that?
She credits a couple of different factors. One is that there is often an immigration issue in households with uninsured children.
Another part of the problem is financial. Many families make too much money to meet Medicare guidelines but not enough to afford coverage. She says the state’s refusal to expand Medicare adds to the problem.
Dunkleberg hopes the effort to educate families on the many programs offering insurance coverage will get better in years to come but admits, it’s going to take a lot of work.
