SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) – Arson investigators are trying to determine what sparked a fire that left one man dead and his wife in the hospital.

The blaze consumed the home just after midnight at the two-story home on Lemur Drive near Vance Jackson.

“The son assisted his mother out of the home,” said Woody Woodward with the San Antonio Fire Department.

Firefighters were told the man who suffered from mobility issues was in the burning home when crews arrived.

“The fire was too severe at that point and we had to pull the firefighters back,” Woodward told KTSA News.

The couple’s son tried to go back in and rescue his father, but San Antonio police detained him.

“He was, as you can imagine, very emotional. He wanted to make entry into the home,” said Woodward.

When firefighters were able to enter the home, they found the man dead. His wife was taken to a hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
