SAPD: Teenager arrested, charged with beating man to death in downtown
SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — A San Antonio teenager has been charged with manslaughter in connection to the death of a man at a downtown hotel.
According to the San Antonio Police Department, Thomas Weaver Jr, 42, was found unconscious in front of the Grand Hyatt Hotel on East Market Street at around 1 a.m. July 14. He was bleeding from the back of his head and was rushed to a hospital where he died eight days later.
Detectives were able to get surveillance video from the hotel, and they say it showed Weaver walking behind a group of six people. The video also shows him being surrounded by three people from the group. One of them, identified as Jeremy James Obregon, 18, punching Weaver in the face.
Weaver then fell backward, hitting his head on the sidewalk. The video shows Obregon hitting Weaver a second time while he was down. There was no indication that Weaver had any interaction with the group prior to the deadly assault.
Police released the video and received several tips identifying Obregon. He was arrested on a manslaughter charged and was later released on $50,000 bond.
Obregon is currently under partial house arrest which allows him to go to church and school.
