Poteet man gets life in prison in capital murder case

SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) —  Atascosa County wanted to get justice for the families of two women killed just over a year ago.

On Wednesday, they got their wish when the man responsible for their deaths was sentenced to life in prison.

Laura West, 43, was found dead in her home that had been set on fire June 29, 2023. Her roommate, Mary Heinz, 33, was missing at the time, although her car and other belongings were still in the home in Leming.

As the investigation got underway, it was found that West had been shot in the head in the home. Some of Heinz’ remains were later found on the side of a road in Poteet with others being found in plastic bags in a dumpster.

Rosendo Jesus Montoya was arrested in the days that followed, and the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office would later say that he had dated West briefly and later became obsessed with her. Authorities say Montoya was seen during surveillance throwing plastic bags into a dumpster in Pleasanton. Those contained human remains and Montoya would later lead detectives to more remains.

According to ACSO, Montoya confessed to killing the women and he later pled guilty to capital murder of multiple persons.
